DEA Shuts Down 56 Underground Labs...

NEW YORK -- In a four-day series of daylight raids that ended Sunday, Drug Enforcement Administration agents shut down 26 underground steroid labs and made more than 50 arrests across the country, capping what agents are calling the largest performance-enhancing drug crackdown in U.S. history. The DEA also has identified 37 Chinese factories that purportedly supplied the raw materials for the labs, a DEA spokesman told ESPN.


The raids capped an 18-month probe that has netted a total of 124 arrests in 27 states and closed 56 labs. The agency also seized $6.5 million and 532 pounds of raw steroid powder -- 308 pounds of it in the past week. Most of the raids took place in quiet suburban neighborhoods.

The investigation also focused on message boards where advice is traded about obtaining raw materials, as well as on the Web sites that help the labs sell finished products to the public. Hundreds of thousands of e-mails were intercepted, according to Dan Simmons, a San Diego-based special agent for the DEA. Simmons said that no professional athletes have been implicated so far but that the e-mails are being compiled into a massive database of names and are being analyzed.

"I don't think we even know what we have yet," he said. "There's no part of the country that wasn't impacted by this."

The crackdown, dubbed "Raw Deal," grew out of a 2005 operation targeting eight Mexican labs that were responsible for 80 percent of America's underground steroid trade. Several large Chinese factories had been supplying the Mexican labs. When the Mexican labs were closed in what came to be known as "Operation Gear Grinder," those Chinese factories redirected their pipeline to the U.S.

"We came to find that 99.9 percent of the steroids in the U.S. were coming from China," Simmons said.

Drug agents in Mexico, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Thailand cooperated in the Raw Deal probe, setting up shell companies to order the raw materials. They also focused on the makers of kits that help underground drugmakers turn raw materials into sellable drugs.

"This wasn't us going after one organization," said Rusty Payne, a DEA spokesman in Washington, D.C. "We went after lots of little cells. There's no one ringleader."

In Westbury, N.Y., the DEA raided the home of an unidentified 38-year-old resident who had boxes of Chinese steroid powder stacked in his garage beside a shiny white Corvette. Agents carted away an estimated 800,000 doses of steroids from the Long Island home, which was described as newly renovated with flat-screen TVs in every room. A lab in the Midwest was so coated with steroid powder that agents said they created footprints in the living room when they entered.

"We want 17-year-olds to know that the stuff they're buying on the Internet isn't what they think," Payne said. "A lot of the time, what they're putting in their body has been mixed in someone's dirty kitchen sink."

In a tragic turn, the subject of another raid in the New York area committed suicide last week after being arraigned on charges of conspiracy and money laundering, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the death. No further information was immediately available.

It is unclear what impact the case will have in China, where the Chinese government is preparing for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Already reeling from a series of food and drug scandals that led to the execution of the head of its state Food and Drug Administration earlier this year, the government has promised the cleanest Olympic Games in history. But it is also keenly aware that performance-enhancing drugs are a source of great profit. The World Anti-Doping Administration estimates that Chinese factories are responsible for as much as 70-80 percent of a $600 million black market in human growth hormone, or up to $480 million worldwide, annually.

Simmons said he and other agents traveled to Beijing to brief their Chinese counterparts in February and handed over information on 10 labs. Since then, he said, the DEA has received information about only one of those 10 being closed. The government reportedly has floated several reform proposals, including banning steroids in pharmacies around Beijing and lowering export quotas to stem the flow of steroids and HGH. But so far, no definitive steps appear to have been taken.

"We're keeping the Chinese in the loop and asking them to do the same," Simmons said.

The DEA is particularly eager to stem the flow of Chinese HGH, which is not approved for sale in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration. Because it often sells illegally for one-third the price of approved brands, Chinese-made growth hormone is proving irresistible for anti-aging clinics and pharmacies that specialize in making generic drugs.

In a separate probe, the Albany, N.Y., district attorney has indicted more than two dozen doctors and pharmacists for running bogus prescription mills for HGH and, in so doing, has helped reveal the widespread use of HGH in sports. St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel and New England Patriots defensive back Rodney Harrison are among those who have acknowledged getting prescriptions from the main pharmacy in the Albany case, Signature of Orlando. Ankiel insists he received a legitimate prescription while rehabbing from elbow surgery in 2004.

Albany prosecutors have met with officials from Major League Baseball and the NFL, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has remarked that he has no reason to believe any other player will be linked to HGH. But the existence of a separate, and much larger, roster of names in Operation Raw Deal is certain to create a new round of concern.

Simmons said the DEA intends to share the Raw Deal names with other law enforcement agencies and Congress. He also said the agency expects to be making arrests based on the evidence for months, if not years.

"In Gear Grinder, we didn't target the end user," he said. "Now, we have investigative leads everywhere."

News conferences about the operation are scheduled for Monday in Kansas City, Mo.; Providence, R.I.; San Diego; Houston; and New York.

When I first read about capturing e-mails sent to sellers, I was scared to death. The DEA said it is targeting "end users" this time and would be making arrests for "months, if not years."

Thats what happened in my case. It WASNT a huge amount but the postal inspector in Philly allerted the inspector where I lived at the time, and they got their job done plain and simple. And for the record, I "shut up" and it worked well. Till they got my supplier to sing his song. And that my friends is all that was needed to prosecute me in federal court. Anyone thats been through this knows what 5-K is, it works well for the federal prosecutors. And hurts the defendants that decide to "shut up". 1) This bust is about sports. The DEA has stated in the past (I can't find the link right now) that they do not target steroids as a high priority. Many DEA guys use them. Half the military uses them. But when political pressure builds due to sports scandals, then the pressure is put on the DEA, and they do one big bust, and it goes away. This happens every so often. It's not about bodybuilding per se. And why does pressure build about sports? Because kids see Bonds and suddenly 15 year old high school kids are popping dbols thinking they'll be hitting .300 and become home run king. It's stupid, but that's what happens.

2) Calling for revolution and whatever is not the way to go about it. I'm a passionate gun owner. My rights are being eroded at every opportunity. So I joined the NRA. I joined my state's rifle association. I go to rallies. I write to the magazine editor when I read an anti-gun story. That's what we gotta do if you really want change with steroids. Write a letter, but an intelligent one, not one calling the editor a stupid dickhead, cause then he thinks, "See? Ignorant, roid-raging bodybuilder". You feed into the stereotypes. I usually dont post any replys on sites. But I think these one my help alot of folks.
I have been messing with ordering gear for almost 9 years now. I have had supplies seized and letters sent to my house. I have had to meet with the FBI and county sheriff's dept years ago about it. You need to listen when some of the guys say slow down. I was always looking for a cheaper deal and faster services. So I got very careless. When i had letters sent to me I kept going and ordering.
I have had my house searched and they have found a good large cycle of gear plus some money. After all that I learned my lesson.
Dont get careless and carried away. Protect your clients and distrubor and stay clean for a while. Clean house on everything you have and dont keep anything close by. There's many places to hide besides in your house or car or belongings. They guys are right about these happening ever 2-3 years they have a crack down. But a lot of the domestic getting caught up with also. I have one of the best domestics around. His prices have doubled on me in the last 6 months but I know I can trust him and him trust me. So be careful when trying out new dealers, dont go looking for that faster or cheaper services because something is usually up. Feel free to ask me any questions.

LE can hold people against their will without arresting them, this is for "questioning" If arrested Always, ALways, Always plead the fifth as you have the right to remain silent, and immediately ask to speak to a lawyer. You don't have to answer any of their questions without legal representation, so don't do it. When have you ever heard of someone being arrested talking to the cops and having the cops say geez what he said makes sense, let's let him go.
If arrested for aas when they weren't in your posession then obviously they had to have a search warrant, to do so they had to have probable cause. Therefore they most likely already have something on you, so definately don't talk. But, if a cop comes to your house and asks to talk or look around, if they have no warrant they have no right to do so.
The laws have changed now so that they can keep you outside of your house while they get a warrant, thus keeping the suspect from destroying/tampering with evidence. So the previous post concerning hiding what ever it is you have to hide is a very prudent idea.

So if you've ever done business with them, be prepared to possibly get a knock on your door just because they want to make an example out of you.

I honestly hope you are right...but that's what I thought before I got nabbed some years back when a source got busted. It's really like everyone says, if you want to play this game be prepared to pay the price. It ran me about $5000 in attorney's fees to get the shit squashed. Being sick and paying insurance companies helps keep the dollars from going outside the USA and buying crap from China etc..

Close but not exactly what I said. What I said is that the USG does not want money going to China or any other country when that money is being used to purchase goods of any kind. We are no longer producers but consumers. So if we consume health care the money is kept in local health care. BUT some major health care providers are now outsourcing major operations to foreign hospitals. That includes hotel expenses and round trip tickets. No kidding, it's now in the news.

first off LE can not hold you unless they have probable cause--holding you for 48 hours is the limit the law can hold you while a investigation is in process. And for anyone who thinks that having a Mailboxes Etc. box or a UPS or PO box somehow helps them...it's only good if that box can't be tied back to you...like if you had some bum off of the street open the box for you. Otherwise, you might as well have the shit sent straight to your house.

Make payment in cash only. Never handle any envelopes or cash money with your hands, use cheap toss away gloves. To be double careful with a source you can use in common a drop e-mail box where both of you have the same password and so both can log into the same e-mail account. Save the communications in the "Draft" file so it never is sent over the internet. No ISP and no IP to track. Have the shipments sent using a fake business name on the box with no registration. If someone wants to use registered mail, then they are a setup. If you are caught your name is not tied to anything in your possession. You can trash the laptop computer. Always destroy all packaging. If possible re-containerize the goods so the bottle etc. looks different. Crush all tabs into powder and say mix it in vitamin powder. Make sure your garbage disposer works and you have plenty of water to run down it. Keep a gallon of laundry bleach at hand to wash down the sink and disposer. A garbage disposer can easily handle a 20ml vial, just use lots of water.

SWAT came to my house because I'd missed a court date for a DUI a ways back (due to some kind of clerical fuckup; all charges were dropped, for the DUI and the contempt, after I spent a few days in jail). They didn't bust down the door or anything; all I saw at first was three sheriff's deputies who came to the front door and took me away.

While I was waiting alone in the back of the squad car, cuffed, as they wrapped up whatever-the-fuck outside, I saw more cops (different uniforms) show up out of nowhere around the house; a friend who visiting at the time got to speak with them, and told me later that it was SWAT (it's pretty unlikely that he made it up; he's an older guy who handles first aid training and supplies for the alabama air national guard, not some punk who likes to make up stories... he thought it was greatly humorous that they'd troubled to send SWAT to pick me up).

He explained that my house was unusual in having four exits (one per side), and they didn't want a foot pursuit, so they sent the guys to each exit in case I made a run for it. He added that it was fairly common practice to look up the house floorplans (registered at the city planning office downtown, per legal mandate) before they even show up. I was in a very small city (pop 50k) with a low crime rate; my guess is that SWAT didn't get much real life experience there, and had nothing better to do than come along for this.

If they came for a guy with no priors who missed a first-time DUI court date, best believe they can show up for part of some federal project. In a REAL city, with you being a small time purchaser up for a first offense, I think you're unlikely to encounter them; but if you're anything even approaching rural, don't laugh off the idea that SWAT will accompany the cops or deputies who come for you. Not because they see you as a threat; they just see it as much-needed practice for a team that rarely gets to see the real thing.

(For what it's worth, I've never heard even a whisper about anything I may or may not have done through the mail.)
